La luz adentro

y la luz afuera: la opacidad
de una lluviosa mañana de abril:
sombras sutiles
que proyecta la lámpara
sobre la luz del día,
una luz no forzada,
la esencia
de la nubosidad
que baja brumosa hasta la calle:
y el marco
imblancamente blanco de una foto enrollada
se modela
como la luz del norte
modeló la cara en esa foto:

y contra una ventana
un árbol muestra
cada hoja levemente coloreada
de otro tono sombrío, algunas
transparentes, otras
no: y en la punta
la oscuridad partida
por la luz que cae
desde afuera (creada
por su ausencia)
yace luminosa dentro de sí misma:
la luminosa oscuridad interna.

The light within

and the light without: the shade
of a rainy April morning:
subtle shadows
cast backwards by lamplight
upon daylight,
soft unforceful daylight,
the essence
of cloud cover
descending mistily into the street:
and the unwhitely
white surround of a curling photograph
models itself
as north light
modeled the face in the photograph:

and against a window
a tree shows
each lightly tinted leaf
another shadowy shade, some
transparently, some
not: and, in the comer
the dark bisected
by the light that falls
from without (created
by its absence)
lies luminous within itself:
the luminous dark within.
