Era igual al momento en que un pájaro decide no comer de tu mano,

y volar, justo antes de volar, al momento en que los ríos parecen aquietarse

y detenerse porque una tormenta está llegando, pero no hay tormenta, o cuando

cien estorninos despegan y se alinean antes de girar y bajar rápido,

muy parecido a cuando manejás sobre hielo resbaladizo, y se te ocurre

que tu auto puede patinar, justo antes de que lentamente empiece a patinar, 

como el instante previo a olvidar qué ibas a decir,       

era así, y después era aún así, sólo que

todo el tiempo.

PART OF EVE’S DISCUSSION // It was like the moment when a bird decides not to eat from your hand, / and flies, just before it flies, the moment the rivers seem to still / and stop because a storm is coming, but there is no storm, as when / a hundred starlings lift and bank togheter before they wheel and drop, / very much like the moment, driving on bad ice, when it occurs to you / your car could spin, just before it slowly begins to spin, like / the moment just before you forgot what it was you were about to say, / it was like that, and after that, it was still like that, only / all the time.

 

Marie Howe nació en Rochester, Nueva York, en 1950. Fue la mayor de nueve hermanos en una familia católica. Es una destacada poeta estadounidense, reconocida por su estilo directo y emotivo que explora el duelo, la cotidianidad y la espiritualidad. Fue Poeta Laureada de Nueva York (2012-2014) y es famosa por obras como What the Living Do, escrita tras la muerte de su hermano por sida. Su poesía aborda la pérdida, el amor, la vida cotidiana y la experiencia humana con un tono conversacional Howe es autora de New and Selected Poems (WW Norton, 2024), ganador del Premio Pulitzer de Poesía 2025. Ha sido preseleccionada para el Premio Nacional del Libro;  The Kingdom of Ordinary Time  (WW Norton, 2009), finalista del Premio Literario del Los Angeles Times ; What the Living Do (WW Norton, 1998), entre otros reconocimientos y galardones.
