UNA PIEDRA EN UNA ALBARRADA

He vivido tanto tiempo en este muro
que bien pude haber nacido aquí. Mi familia
está asentada a mi alrededor, me aguanta, me sostiene,
alguna vez caído, vuelto a levantar.
Durante la noche el frío y a menudo la lluvia.
Puedo sentirlo, no es puro.
Parte de mí se ha ido, desgastado,
para marcar un lindero,
para mantener alejadas a las ovejas de un hombre
del pasto de otro hombre: poco más
que un matorral que después de todo
serviría mejor para la cosecha.

Es todavía de noche. Puedo sentir las estrellas
como siento las estaciones, aunque sólo por un instante,
sobre el horizonte del bosque, desde mi apeñuscado ángulo,
alcanzo a ver de repente una estrella.
No puedo imaginar a qué constelación pertenece.
Está atenuada y vacila
pero nunca llega a desaparecer.
Lo que más recuerdo es un tiempo en que era de día,
el sol se alzaba como una promesa cumplida
y que me calentaba.

A STONE IN A DRYSTONE WALL

I have lived so long in this wall
I might have been born here. My family
sit round me, hold me in, hold me up,
fallen once, built back.
At night the cold and often the rain.
I can feel it, it is not pure.
Part of me is gone, worn away
for the sake of a boundary,
for the sake of keeping one man's sheep
from another man's grass: little more
than scrubland that after all
would be stronger for cropping.

It is still night. I am aware of the stars
as I am of the seasons, though only for a moment
over the line of forest from my crammed-in
angle do I ever see a star.
I cannot imagine which constellation it belongs to.
It is dimmed and flickers
but never quite disappears.
Mostly I remember a time there was daylight,
the sun coming up like a promise honoured
and being warmed by it.

Peter Sansom. Poeta inglés, nació en 1958, en Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Fue educado en Quarrydale Comprehen-sive, Bretton Hall College y el Huddersfield Polytechnic, donde más tarde impartió clases de creación literaria. Ha realizado numerosas Estancias Creativas, una de ellas en la Doncaster Central Library. Escribió un libro de texto titulado Writing Poems. Entre sus colecciones de poesía se incluyen Everything you've Heard is True (1990) y January (1994) y Point of of Sale (2000). Ha sido co-editor de la revista The North y editor de crítica en Orbis. Ha recibido reconocimientos y becas del Arts Council y de la Society of Authors, entre otros.
