EL ENÉSIMO BORRADOR

Por semanas nada encajó.

Había estado tratando de recordar
detalles, conexiones.

THE N th. DRAFT

For weeks nothing had fitted.
I had been trying to remember
details, connections. Everything in my room
was unfinished, half-imagined,
and when I went out half the town
had crept away. The whole train journey
I stared out at an Atlantis
of dazed canals, power lines vanishing
above abrupt estates, trees rooted
in mid-air; trying to piece it together, that nagging;
blur of cattle, the silhouetted
tractor, the village you could lose forever;
as if the whole country was an elegy
I couldn't conclude, acre after acre
gone stale. When I stepped out you were there
and I would have made something of that too,
I'd have had you walk on air, your body
a ghostly paraphernalia, your smile
weirdly decisive. Instead, you kissed me lightly
and led me through the streets, the fog
that stayed for days, or lifted that night, I forget.
